This Week In Music – 21st October 2022

A weekly update on all things music, advertising, and technology coming straight to you from Anthony Vanger at MassiveMusic. #TWIM

ARTIST OF THE WEEK: PINK FLOYD

Just like the Battersea Power Station, Animals, Pink Floyd’s sometimes overlooked 1977 masterpiece has been given a facelift. The remix is fantastic, Roger Waters’ lyrics are as relevant as ever and the musicianship is astounding. The album sold 12 million units, not as much as Dark Side of the Moon or the Wall, but still a testament to the band’s continued power and relevance. According to the liner notes, Animals was a concept album, focusing on the social-political conditions of mid-1970s Britain. The album’s iconic cover shows an inflatable pig floating between two chimneys of the Battersea Power Station. I recall this LP being on heavy rotation at our house. I would jump up at the end of side A and flip it to side B only to jump up again and flip it over to side A a short while later. The album is surprisingly short, clocking in at 41 mins. Other times, I would stare at the cover and wonder how they recorded the sounds of the pigs.

AD OF THE WEEK:

Coldplay has been pushing the bounds of technology for all their global tours – syncopated wristbands, ground-breaking visuals – so it kind of made sense that they would shift their focus to an area that is close to the band’s hearts: sustainability. Chris Martin even said that the band would not tour again until it figured out how to go green. Coldplay set an ambitious goal to reduce their CO2 emissions by more than 50% for the Music Of The Spheres World Tour. In order to do so, they partnered up with DHL. Some examples of where they have made changes are solar paneling behind the stage, aluminum drinks cups instead of plastic, and for every ticket sold they plant a tree. As Martin said recently, “Being clean and green can be part of any successful business.

JOE ROGAN AND STEVE JOBS HAVE A 20-MINUTE CHAT IN AI-POWERED PODCAST

Artificial intelligence has allowed us to simulate all kinds of situations through computer systems. Some of its main applications are language processing and speech recognition, and now, through play.ht and podcast.ai we’re actually able to see how far the technology has come by experiencing a conversation with someone who is not even on Earth anymore.

In an entirely AI-generated podcast, podcast.ai has created a full interview between Joe Rogan and Steve Jobs. While the first bit of the podcast is clunky with weird pauses and awkward laughing, it does start to move into real conversation touching on faith, tech companies, drugs, and at one point the AI-generated Jobs uses the analogy of a car where you have to buy all four wheels separately to Adobe’s services.

The crazy thing is some parts begin to sound believable, and actually keep you listening as you start to make a connection to what they are saying. This could be enforced by the prevalence of Joe Rogan in the current podcast sphere, and the general curiosity of witnessing what Steve Jobs would have said if the two ever did meet. Have a listen below to experience the AI podcast for yourself.

DEEZER LAUNCHES HUMMING FEATURE TO IDENTIFY EARWORMS IN YOUR HEAD

Deezer has launched an in-app feature that allows users to hum, sing or whistle parts of a song in order to identify earworms stuck in their heads. The SongCatcher tool allows you to then save music that’s playing, without leaving the app.

The streaming company’s SongCatcher track identification feature originally launched in 2018 and is the only in-app track recognition feature on a music streaming platform that includes humming and whistling, according to Deezer

“Everyone knows how frustrating it can be to have a song stuck in their heads, and we’re very proud to be the first music streaming service in the world to give our users the opportunity to identify a track by just humming, singing, or whistling it directly in the app,” said Alexandra Leloup, VP Core Product, Deezer. “As we keep improving the algorithm, the feature will become faster and even more accurate when it comes to recognizing songs across our 90 million track library.”
