ARTIST OF THE WEEK: DMA’s
DMA’s are an Australian three-piece rock band formed in 2012 in Sydney. The letters are not an anacronym and that elusive quality is perhaps an illustration of what the band is about. The sound is ephemeral, with shades of The Stone Roses (check out the Bucket Hat) blending with a straight-up pop sensibility. Whilst they have built a steadily-growing following with their winning 21st-century take on the swaggering, hook-heavy Baggy and Britpop sounds of the 1990s, this new music is a departure into something with a more global appeal. Gone is the heavy emphasis on guitars and on come the synth drums and syncopated keyboards. But the thing that I love about this band, aside from the strong lyrics (“everybody’s saying Thursday is the weekend) is the vocals – sometimes alone, sometimes layered, but always intriguing and telling me a story the audience wants to hear.

AD OF THE WEEK: SAMSUNG “JOIN THE FLIP SIDE”
Really good ad from Samsung and Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam. It takes a good idea and like a good jazz musician, riffs on it for a while, exploring the ups and downs of it, massaging it, and all the while tickling the viewer’s funny bone. The end is a little creepy, but the humor makes easier to wash down. Nice work from W+K Amsterdam.
TAYLOR SWIFT BECOMES FIRST MUSICIAN TO CLAIM ENTIRE TOP 10 ON BILLBOARD HOT 100
Taylor Swift scored a 10 out of 10 to become the first artist in history to claim the Top 10 slots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US, with tracks from her latest album, Midnights.
Billboard reported on Monday that Swift has surpassed Drake, who had held the previous record with nine of the Top 10 songs for a week in September 2021.
“10 out of 10 of the Hot 100??? On my 10th album??? I AM IN SHAMBLES,” the 32-year-old pop star tweeted.
The new album came out on 21 October with both a 13-track standard release and a deluxe version with seven bonus tracks. It has had one of the biggest album launches in nearly seven years. Billboard also reported that Swift now ties with Barbra Streisand for the female artist with the most No 1 albums.
The No 1 spot on the Billboard chart belongs to Anti-Hero, whose lyrics “It’s me/hi/I’m the problem/It’s me” have quickly become a TikTok trend. The other Top 10 songs include Lavender Haze, Maroon, Snow on the Beach, Midnight Rain, Bejeweled and Question … ?
Swift has set a number of new records with Midnights: it had the biggest first week of sales of any album this year, almost doubling the numbers of the previous title-holder, Harry’s House, the third solo album by Harry Styles. Midnights also had the highest first-week streams of the year: 72.5m, again beating Styles’ figures of 53.9m.
On the day of its release, Midnights broke global Spotify records for the most streams of a single album in one day.

AUDIO-TECHNICA RE-INTRODUCES THE SOUND BURGER AND LAUNCHES NEW HIGH-END TURNTABLE
As part of its 60th-anniversary celebrations, Audio-Technica has announced the reintroduction of the Sound Burger portable record player and has launched a new high-end turntable, the AT-LP2022.
Originally popular in the 1980s, the Sound Burger will allow you to play 33-1/3 and 45 RPM singles and LPs on the go, thanks to its dynamic balance system which uses a spring to apply pressure to the stylus.
Whilst its aesthetic stays loyal to the original Sound Burger, this updated version includes modern touches such as a USB-C charging port and Bluetooth connectivity.
Audio-Technica has also announced the launch of the AT-LP2022 turntable. Limited to only 3000 units worldwide, the AT-LP2022 features a high-density clear acrylic chassis and a Shibata stylus.
For the AT-LP2022’s launch, Audio-Technica president, Kazuo Matsushita explained: “It is an honour to provide a quality audio experience to millions of people throughout the
world. What begins as a simple vibration–a subtle movement–results in an emotional connection, whether that be when listening deeply to an album or sharing your voice with the world.”
The AT-LP2022 will be available in Winter 2022.
