This Week In Music – 2nd December 2022

A weekly update on all things music, advertising, and technology coming straight to you from Anthony Vanger at MassiveMusic. #TWIM

ARTIST OF THE WEEK: JENNY HVAL “YEAR OF LOVE”

It is hard to be different and original. Jenny Hval, a Norwegian artist, manages to achieve both effortlessly. A lot has to do with her voice, nasal and insistent, but with a surprising authority. Her music is mainly electronica, but she is not afraid to borrow from different styles, from reggae and calypso. There is quasi-religious quality to her work and her androgynous persona, and in that way she reminds me of Björk and Suzanne Vega, demur but powerful. I love the space in her music and her conversational delivery generates a quiet power. Her new, eighth album is called “Classic Objects” and it ponders woman’s place in society. In addition to her singing career, Hval is a published novelist.

AD OF THE WEEK: MODELO “SACRIFICE”

Easy one to pick this week given we are on the verge of the knock-out stages of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Clever ad from Grey New York for client Modelo aligning with the World Cup with some subtle humour paying homage to fallen beers and a ‘brewed for fans’ tagline. The slo-mo works well as you see various shots of fans watching games with not much concern for the contents of their cans or glasses of Modelo beer as it sloshes to the floor. The iconic music, The Ecstasy of Gold from The Good, Bad and the Ugly, from Ennio Morricone adds the perfect touch.
