Once in a while we catch a glimpse of the future. Olivia Dean, a 24-year-old soul singer from London takes the mantle from the likes of Sade and Lauren Hill and delivers her own take on the neosoul and RnB genre. An alumni of the prestigious (and prolific) Brit School, which has produced the likes of Adele, Jessie J., and Amy Winehouse, Dean is staking her claim away from pure pop into a cooler, jazzy sound. She is not one for vocal fireworks, preferring to purr her way through a song, luring the listener with subtle tones and dropping confessional lyrics over bedroom grooves. After starting out as a singer with British drum and bass outfit Rudimental in 2017 and going solo in 2019, Dean is starting to come into her own. In this song, “Echo”, she is confident standing in front of her band, the epitome of cool in a green velvet suit, a young woman with the world at her feet and a big future ahead.
