ARTIST OF THE WEEK: TAMINO “FASCINATION”

Sometimes I think I am listening to Jeff Buckley or is it Radiohead? Other times I hear the Middle Eastern influences that take me away from western pop. And other times still I feel like I am just listening to the coolest guy on campus. This Belgian-Egyptian model-turned-musician, the grandson of a legendary Egyptian movie star, who lives and records in his hometown of Antwerp, has developed a captivating sound. With an earnest singer-songwriter writing style, Tamino brings together Arabic and European folk traditions to deliver an intimate, atmospheric record. His main weapon is his voice, which can be a low, rich brooding baritone one minute and a soaring falsetto the next. The 25-year-old has built a solid local following in Belgium, but as he sings in English, it definitely feels like his label has its sights on a global audience.

AD OF THE WEEK: LUKA DONCIC AI ALTER EGO

I love this idea of turning a sports star into an alter ego so that it can interact with fans. Luk.AI will be outfitted in a Jumpman Flight Suit from Nike’s Jordan Brand, as well as Dončić’s Luka 1 signature shoe. Dončić took a different approach on Twitter. His @luka7doncic handle boasts more than 1.7 million followers, and he established a new @Luk_AI handle for his virtual alter ego. The AI alter ego will also be leveraged to further the efforts of the Luka Dončić Foundation, which focuses on the positive power of play for kids, and the Mark Cuban Foundation AI Bootcamps spearheaded by the Mavericks’ owner. Dončić added, “I thought it would be fun to turn myself into an AI and invite my fans to help me train him. He will explore many of my favorite interests outside of basketball, build new connections with fans and creators, and help me with my mission of bringing more play to the world. I’m very excited to see what happens with this new kind of entertainment.” Expect to see more of this kind of advertising where talent creates an alter ego, allowing them to do things that they could never do in real life – such as interacting with millions of fans when you are not present – to also doubling your earnings potential by “renting” out not just you, but your alter-you!

NEW HANS ZIMMER DOCUMENTARY TO AIR THIS MONTH

A new documentary about the life and work of famed composer Hans Zimmer is set to debut on UK TV this month.

‘Hans Zimmer: Hollywood Rebel’ will look over the German composer’s 40+ years in the music industry, which have seen him produce a number of albums, performance pieces, and film soundtracks. It will air in the UK on BBC Two at 9 pm BST on 16th October.

In addition to Zimmer, the film will feature interviews with directors with whom Zimmer has worked on films, such as Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, and Steve McQueen. It will also take in clips from the composer’s tour of Europe earlier this year.

Speaking in a statement, Zimmer said: “My hope is that this documentary inspires and emboldens you to unapologetically pursue your passions and find a deeper understanding for my scores and above all, music.”

During his career, Zimmer has scored films such as ‘Interstellar’, ‘Dune’ and ‘Inception’, and picked up the Academy Award for Best Music (Original Score) on two occasions. His honors also include multiple Grammy and Golden Globe awards.

A NEW VERSION OF ‘THREE LIONS’ IS BEING RELEASED FOR 2022 WORLD CUP

A new version of the 1996 football anthem ‘Three Lions’ is being released in time for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seeds’ Ian Broudie have confirmed the news of the track, which was originally sung by the pair and David Baddiel when England hosted the Euros in 1996, featuring the famous lyric: “Football’s coming home”.

Broudie appeared as a guest on Skinner’s breakfast show on Absolute Radio, during which Skinner asked him: “So, I’ve gotta ask you Ian, are you going to do a new version of ‘Three Lions’ for the World Cup? I think it’d be good, it’s an unusual sort of World Cup.”

Broudie replied: “We should have a chat about that maybe,” Skinner responded: “We’ve left it a bit late, we’re filming the video on Thursday!”

Earlier this year, David Baddiel said that the football song should be “put to bed” after the England Women’s team’s Euro 2022 victory.

“The women have reset the clock,” Baddiel told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme according to The Guardian after they won the Euros this summer.

THE RECORD FACTORY CUTS YOUR OWN 5” VINYL AT HOME

Teenage Engineering has announced the launch of the PO-80 Record Factory, a compact, USB-powered record cutter that lets you cut your own 5” vinyl at home and even play them back in lo-fi sound. 

Made in collaboration with Japanese designer Yuri Suzuki, the bright orange and white-colored PO-80 comes with 5″ blank records (with sleeves) that allow four minutes or three minutes of recording time per side at 33 rpm and 45 rpm. You can also attach a 7″ record adapter (included) for playback, with built-in speakers or the option of connecting to an external speaker through the separate 3.5 mm audio output.
